Chapter 13

I stood by my workstation, staring forlornly at my ruined, smoking cupcakes. I’d gotten distracted talking to Dave, and I’d forgotten about them. There was nothing I could do to save them. Even cutting off the burnt bits wouldn’t be enough to salvage these disasters.

Elwin patted my shoulder. “Don’t worry. Your involvement in the contest was only for fun. We figured it might up the finalists’ game when they saw you hard at work. It’s such a shame to see these delicious cakes ruined.”

Henriette walked over and joined us. Her nose wrinkled as she stared at my cakes. “Did the oven malfunction?”

“It was my fault. I wasn’t paying attention. I put the cupcakes in the oven and then got talking to the crew.”

“I’ll have a word with them,” Henriette said. “They shouldn’t be bothering judges. They’re here to work, not distract you. Who was it?”

“No, I went to talk to them. This isn’t their fault.”

“Didn’t you get the feeling?” Elwin said.

I glanced at him and shook my head. I knew what he meant, but I never got the feeling. Not once. Uncle Albert often talked about it, how he would put something in the oven, be serving at the counter, and have to dash away when his cakes magically informed him they were ready to come out. The only feeling I got when I looked at my baked goods was intense disappointment and lingering failure.

“Everyone can get distracted.” Elwin’s smile was reassuring. “I remember in my first year of advanced bakery skills, I once turned a cake bright green. I had to pretend it was vegetable inspired.”

I forced myself to chuckle along with them, but I was mortified. And when I looked closely at the cupcakes, they looked lumpy as well as charred. Maybe Bram’s magic wasn’t good when it came to creating baked goods.

“I’m embarrassed by mine, too. Wait here. I’ll show you what I’ve created.” Henriette dashed off and returned with an amazing plate of pale yellow cupcakes topped with tiny iced flowers. “Aren’t they just awful?”

“They look good to me,” I said.

“You’re too kind. I might have another go, see if I can do better.” Henriette took a look at my cakes again and shook her head. “Maybe you should, too.”

The last thing I wanted to do was make even more terrible cupcakes. “I’ll deal with these first.”

“Don’t look so sad,” Elwin said. “Even the best of the best needs a learning experience. This is yours. And I can guarantee you won’t get distracted again.”

I gave him my best smile. I could guarantee I would. Baking didn’t make my heart sing. It simply made it want to take a long vacation somewhere hot, where I didn’t have to lift a finger when it came to making the desserts.

Elwin checked the time and clapped his hands together. “Everyone, it’s time to stop baking. We’ve done enough filming for the day.”

There were several relieved groans from the camera crew around us.

“Store your cakes away, and tomorrow you’ll decorate them.
